How much is sound proofing?

Question

We have a noisy neighbour. Our living room (ground floor) and bedroom (upstairs) are next to each other and you can hear her music loudly.

How much would soundproofing be?

How efficient is it?

Which rooms do we sound proof - the whole house or just the rooms next to each other?

unfortunately - sound is hard to form a barricade from.

I paid about 4000 dollars to sound-proof my basement area, where the folks are staying.

I placed them FAR from where my bedroom is...

I did stagger-studding and filled the gap with fiberglass, and used 5/8" Sheetrock.

I put CARPET on the floor that is above them.

If the house is QUIET and I listen real hard... I can still HEAR their TV.   Of course they are in their 80s and they really CRANK IT.

But my point is... during the construction process and 4K bucks later... it's still not GREAT.  (of course for ME... it's still not BAD)

wow,you got a problem!....as for sound proofing, its expensive no matter what route you take. Since it's wall to wall, there's not a whole lot to do.  Extra thick curtains hung on walls help(minimally)...some better hardware stores sell 'treated' tile for soundproofing,but I think only for ceilings....plus there's paint that has a soundproofing added treatment believe it or not....the only efficient way is to line those walls with another layer of thicker sheetrock,believe it or not......actually,your best bet is call the cops to tell'em to calm it down some..if that fails,find out what music they "hate" and start blasting away once theirs stops about 2 in the morning-they might get the point....  as for soundproofing I've been through all that putting in a recording studio, and the walls simply have to be thicker in the first place(thats where the extra layer of sheet rock comes in, I mentioned)....any,or all of those things might help you out, but as for sound/vibrations traveling into your side, you'll not stop all of it,sorry to say.  good luck, my son went through the same problem when he moved out into an apartment..he settled his by bouncing a basketball against the wall every night for two hours!..Ya gotta get creative sometimes!!

sound proofing costs a lot of money especially  really effective proofing. Chances are you will spend upwards of 4,000-5,000$ and you will still hear much of the noise since the room was not built to be sound proofed.

You best bet it contact the landlord or the police there are laws against that it usually falls under "Quality of life" no matter what time of day if the noise is excessive and its bothersome contact some sort of authority and it will either be fixed or their fines will pile up until they cant pay for the lights.

Baseball bat would be cheaper lol.Rent some disco equipment and buy a greek taverner cd and put it on they will get the message very quick
