  1. I think the average varies based on the subject, location, and credentials.  I know of tutors who make about $20 an hour to tutor one student. That may seem kind of steep, but this tutor gives the very best in working with the student and has a great reputation in tutoring.  Does the tutor have good communication skills?  Have they had experience in the subject and with the age group?  This all plays into how much the tutor can expect to get paid.  If the boys are the same age and tutored at the same time, this gives the parent some power to get 2 for the price of 1.  If a tutor has to do different times, consideration for gas and time should reflect in the hourly wage.  Basically, it is up to the parent and tutor to come into an agreement about what is acceptable and clearly spell out expectations so that parents feel they are getting their money's worth and tutor feels they are being paid their worth (time is money, right?).  I know of a teacher who is going to teach 7 boys writing skills each week...she is extremely qualified.  She is charging each family $10 per hourly session...if you multiply that by 7, that's a nice wage!  However, each of those boys comes from a different home so if each parent is only paying $10 each week, it seems doable for the parents.  Hope this gives you some idea.

  2. Homeschoolers don't normally have tutors. And the wage would probably depend on how many hours a week you're looking at.

  3. You may consider a curriculum that is designed to eliminate the need for tutors.  Check out the Teaching Textbooks website for math.  My kids use this-there is a CD that has the solution for every problem worked out step by step.  My kid has done very well with Algebra and that program.  Apologia Science also is geared right to the student.  Then there are also co-op classes, which we use for writing/Grammar.

I paid a tutor 20.00 per hour for math for quite a while, but I noticed that she wasn't doing anything different than I did.

  4. There isn't really a "normal" hourly wage, since most homeschoolers don't use tutors.  However, a good tutor can range anywhere from $15-45 per hour (hence the reason most of us don't use them).  :)

I tutor kids that are in my co op classes when they need additional instruction, I charge $10 per hour; however, they're also in my (paid) classes each week, they come to me (high schoolers), and they're always prepared to work.  So, it really depends on what the tutor is being asked to do and how much prep they'll have to take on.
