I just registered a vehicle in North Carolina for the first time (from another state)........ They charged me 3% of the wholesale value of the car (however they decide) and a $5.00 notary fee. They said it would be $28.00 renewal registration each year...... I asked about personal property tax (which I have heard about)....... they said that was handled by the tax assessor..... Does anyone know the amount of tax that has to be paid each year for an automobile - considered personal property?

  1. Impossible to answer without knowing what county you are in and what the tax rate is for that county.  As they suggested at the DMV, the tax assessor would have those answers, call the clerk at the county seat and ask.
