  1. Go to this Rand McNally website & put in what cities you're driving to & from.  Click on 'state' to pick a Canadian province.  On the next page it will give you the driving distance, time, & a map of the route.  Check the map to make sure it's the same route you have in mind.  I'll give examples, but in US conversions; you'll use the metric system.

Divide the number of miles you're driving (distance) by the number of miles per gallon (mpg) your car gets.  (example:  1,000 mile trip divided by 25 mpg car being driven = 40 gallons of gas required for the trip).  The answer is the number of gallons it will take to drive there.  Then multiply that by the average cost of a gallon of gas all along the way you're travelling.  (40 gallons required for trip times $4.00 per gallon of gas = $160).  Your answer will be in Canadian dollars.

Make sure the route map matches the route you want to take.  If not, you'll have to break it down into smaller sections.  Be sure you use kms, not miles.  And add a little when you're done because you'll most likely make some side trips.  The travel time they give you includes about one 15 minute break (for gas, food, etc) for every 2 hours of driving.

  2. I agree with Freewith, but gas in the US is about $4.25 US a gallon (i.e. 4 L) whereas gas in Canada is about $1.35 a liter (i.e. $5.40 per gallon) so unless you really, really love prairie scenery, I'd consider going the US route and popping back up the other side.  Also, the US highways usually are a little faster, but that might be just the BC side, which is where we usually go, as it's so twisty through the passes.  My in-laws live near the Rockies and even from Vancouver it's sometimes worth it for us to take the I-90 across and come up the Kingsgate crossing.  With the stronger $Cdn, it's something to consider.  Have a great trip!
