  1. U.S. Department of Energy is who you should contact for in depth information on this. I think your question if fantastic. I could not find precise the information for you. There are two links for you below.

By comparison, water is cleaner than fossil fuels for electricity generation, however, large dams stop the natural flow of water which can destroy vegetation, aquatic life, and cause other serious ecological damage.

Much more detailed information on renewable energy resources is widely available on the Web. The Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Network of the U.S. Department of Energy is one such source (www.eere.energy.gov)

  2. my friend retired and bought a parcel of land near beautiful waterfalls and rapids....

he built a small resort, with cold springs, hot springs pools and run all the electricity via generators run off the waterfalls...

  3. after construction cost of the dam, other than maintenance hydro power is free. problem is finding a suitable location

  4. It´s the initial costs which are the problem.Hydro-Electric power is by far the best method of generating electricity but it needs a dam across a suitable river and of course it has to back up water for many miles which takes land out of use.It probably costs about ten times more than a conventional steam power plant but once it is  built it is virtually maintenance free except for erosion of the turbine wheels and any silt building up behind the dam.It is also non polluting and fuel costs are virtually zero although good sites are becoming harder to find.
