Question:

How much land does a longhorn need?

I'm thinking of purchasing one and using it primarily as a lawn ornament. I'd prefer buying only one but is it better to purchase them in pairs? I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks.

  1. When we figure on putting our cattle out in the pasture, we always figure about 1 acre per head.  Also what you would need to put into consideration is how much lawn will this animal have to eat.  You may have to give it another sort of a daily ration also.  I would think that the animal would be fine by its self.  Good luck on getting a automatic lawnmower!  Hopefully I was a help to you!

  2. To start with, one longhorn steer would do just fine by himself.  As to the amount of land you would need to support it, it would depend entirely on where you lived and how much grass you had.   If you have good grass and lived where you got plenty rain, or watered your grass, one acre would be about right.  He could get by on less land if you supplemented his grazing with some hay and/or a little grain.  You can seed something like winter wheat, oats or rye grass over your grass to keep him in grazing through the winter.  If you found that one steer wasn't utilizing all of your grass,                                                              you might consider getting the second steer, or a couple of meat goats to go with him.

  3. Check with your local USDA extension office.  They have the info.  Also, check your local zoning to ensure that they're allowed.

  4. depending on what part of the country you are in depends on the acrerage per animal with the minimum about one acre per animal but that is in area that recieves good rain and has plenty of grass i have also raise cows on both one acre per animal and 20 miles away the pasture was 5 acres per animal like i said it depends on the area you are at
