And also do you think that NASCAR would ever take off the rear wing and possibly the front spoiler to make competition better??

  1. 11.349%

  2. i dont think they wreck any more or any less. its the fact that when they do wreck its a safer car

  3. if NASCAR does not have the same slammin into things and flyin everywhere, people are going to loose interest in this sport.

  4. I do not have the stats in front of me but I do not think that there are any fewer wrecks with the COT.  I think that it is obviously a lot tougher and we are seeing more cars finish races than in previous years.  The spoiler and the front splinter are there for increased competition.  This aero package is what NASCAR came up with in order to provide the most competitive racing they could put on the track.  This package was supposed to make the cars less aero dependent and help improve racing and increase passing.  I think the jury may still be out on that but that was there reasoning for the spoiler and front splinter.

  5. NASCAR is all about safety. Let's face it, w/o the wing on the back for down force some of those wrecks this year would have been deadly due to the car flying in the air higher or if not for the safer barriers.

The cars are tougher. You do not see as much metal flying off the cars as the old cars. The cars are tanks!

  6. percentage wise, there are not any fewer wrecks as they (wrecks) mostly have to do with the drivers. It's not regular that parts break unless the car is set up completely wrong or there's a problem with a specific part. The wing & splitter are for downforce & stability. Take those away and there'll be more wrecks.

  7. Two questions:

    1) how much less does it wreck? I think probably we are seeing about 1/4 the wrecks from what we saw with the old cars and we are seeing some cars that get "loose" able to drive their way out of it.

    2) will NASCAR ever take off the rear wing and spoiler? Not likely. With safety so clearly obvious with the new car I think NASCAR will stay with it for the foreseeable future

  8. Not much less than before.  It doesn't matter what kind of car they drive.  As long as these twenty yr. old pretty boys are holding wide open until they run into something they are still gonna wreck.

  9. it seems to hit the wall a lot more, but survive more often.  also, although chad knaus claims that the new cars have less side force than the old car, it does seem to be able to "right itself" (with the driver's guidance of course) more often than before. the side panels on the rear wing help keep the car from spinning quite as much as the old configuration with the spoiler.  fishtailing for any of a number of reasons (getting loose, getting nudged in a corner, etc) in the past almost invariably ended in wrecks, but now, not so much.

also, getting "bump drafted" or even just nudged from behind in the past would more often than not lift the rear wheels and send drivers into the wall or the infield (as still happens in the nns and ncts).  now that the front and back bumpers match up more evenly, well, we've seen the results - particularly in daytona and talladega.  i think the rear wing and the front end are going to stay pretty much the same, but that's just my opinion.

i think it's analogous to the saying "that car just wrecked, it just didn't hit anything."  for the COT, "that car just wrecked, it just didn't hurt it as much (or get as far out of control)."
