  1. Do NOT drink while breastfeeding. Here are some fact's about drinking and breastfeeding:

    Your milk may smell different and put your baby off feeding;

    The alcohol may make your baby too sleepy to feed;

    Your baby may have difficulties with digestion and problems with sleeping patterns.

    If it's a special occasion and you know you're going to be drinking, consider expressing milk in advance. You can also avoid breastfeeding for two to three hours after drinking to minimise the effects. Have your drink after the last feed of the day - if you can predict when that will be!

  2. the people who answered sound like they are promoting formula feeding...which as you most likely know...that is no where good enough for your baby...

    I breastfeed and it was my b-day, i asked my doctor if i could drink and how much...he said to be honest nobody really knows how much can harm a child...but it elevates the prolactin in your body..so you produce alot more milk!

    I had a few glasses and just made sure i expressed so i wasnt feeding her straight after drinking. She was absolutely fine..

    I would much rather breastfeed and drink than bottle feed and drink...the same with smoking...no matter what..breast is best!!

    Go ahead and have glass....be responsible!

  3. It will enter your breastmilk.  There is a website http://www.obfocus.com/calculators/alcoh... and it tells you (generally) how long until the alcohol will be out...depending upon the amount you're drinking.  For me, it was about 2 to 2 1/2 hours for one drink.  If I feel like having a beer or a glass of wine, I just make sure that I do so right after feeding or pumping...and then wait for it to exit.  Sometimes it's just hard to pass up an ice cold beer on a hot, sunny day, so you don't have to go without, just use prudence and good common sense.  You don't have to go without...unless you choose to do so.  Cheers!

  4. Breastfeeding....yes, you wait until you are finished.

    Bottle feeding....have a glass!!

  5. If you are breastfeeding then you can NOT drink until you are finished breastfeeding.  If you are bottle feeding then you can drink whenever you want.

  6. Someone asked a question about this earlier. If you go out and have A drink, or even a couple, then no worries. You don't have to wait until you're completely done breastfeeding. Just do not go overboard with the drinks.

    "Although these experts disagree about the length of time between drinking and breastfeeding, one thing they all agree about is that mothers who drink while breastfeeding should only do so moderately and "moderate" means no more than two drinks per day."

  7. drinking while breastfeeding is okay, you just shouldn't actively breastfeed while ingesting alcohol nor should you feed or pump if you are still feeling tipsy or woozy at all.  as long as the breastmilk is still in your system your body will burn up the alcohol just like it does from the rest of your body. (per my lactation consultant)  however if you aren't sure there is a product i saw on the internet that you can test your breastmilk with to make sure that it is alcohol free. i think it was on amazon.com

  8. Oh, yeah after your done breast feeding. I wouldn't start until my baby was around 6 months... just me.... exposing the baby to alcohal early isn't a good idea :D

  9. Yes, alcohol will pass through breastmilk.  If you want to drink a few one night, pump and get rid of it afterwards and use a bottle for a day or so instead of breastfeeding.

  10. If you are breastfeeding, you can have the occasional beer or glass of wine without having to stop breastfeeding, you can even drink more on occasion, as long as you wait until you are sober to breastfeed again.

    If you are bottlefeeding, you could theoretically start drinking as soon as you give birth.

    But keep in mind that alchohol is a blood thinner, if you have a c-section or are still healing from recovery, heavy drinking can put you at risk for hemorhage.

  11. You can go out and have a drink or two while nursing, however, you just need to wait a few hours for it to leave your system before you nurse.

  12. alcohol is a toxin, and now that you have a baby child's life to take care of, i would recommend never drinking. Don't put yourself in the position to ruin that kids life.

    Trust me, both your lives will be better without the drink.

  13. I would not drink when breast feeding, everything you put into your body, goes into your babies body.  I would wait until after you are done.  I breast fed the first 6 weeks, then drank after that.  If you want to continue to breast feed...after drinking, I would pump and dump all day, and not give your baby any breast milk for atleast 24 hours after your last drink is done.

  14. Well..

    Since you are nursing.. if you wanted to be really paranoid... I guess you should wait until you're done.. but that could end up being for a really long time.. depending on how long you are planning to nurse.

    It is safe for you to have ONE drink. Any more than one could effect the breast milk.

    Hope I helped! (:

  15. The occasional drink (one drink) while breastfeeding is okay.
