How much milk (average) does a single cow produce in a daily basis?

I may get a cow to produce my own milk, cheese and butter...

  1. A Lot!  I have heard of some Holstein cows in our area that produce around 5 gallons per milking (and you have to do it twice a day).  I haven't milked cows so I don't know if that's an average number or not.  I have thought about that too and I think I will go with dairy goats--I just want enough for my family.  But even some of the top producing dairy goats gan produce a gallon or two per milking.  Hope this helps.


  2. Holsteins can produce up to 100 lb of milk per day. That's something like 12 1/2 gallons (although most Holsteins only produce about 10 gallons. Got a large family? :-) Most farms that milk mostly Holsteins keep a Jersey or Guernsey for the "house milk". The yield is a lot less but the butterfat content is way higher.
