We are in good health but sick of the rat race. We would like to retire somewhere where the cost of living is low. Guatemala seems ideal with its relatively close proximity to the US. We would not want to work. Modest home required. Would US $1 million be enough for 30 years in Guatemala? $1.5 million? Please...anyone...provide insight!

  1. Costa rica is better I have been to Guatemala my husband is Guatemalan but there is constant violence there especially against older americans. I would not chance it if I were you.

  2. Guatemala is probably one of the cheapest places to live right now.  If you just lived off the dividend of U.S.D. 1 Million... you could live quite nicely.

I lived in Costa Rica for a while... (San Jose) and it's like living in Denver except the mountains are on the wrong side. But a few years ago I decided to come back to the Caribbean.. I had lived here for several years in the 1980's... and I am now living on my boat in the Yacht Club on Antigua and LOVE it... the island is a bit small, but I really like this place... you can easily walk anywhere that is worth going to and there is always something going on... right now, people are starting to get ready for Race Week.

  3. You could live off about 400,000 dollars easily, but I would move to Costa Rica is more stable

  4. Philippines is MUCH better. Cebu or Leyte, friend.
