  1. does anyone play board games any more?

my point is, compensation is often based on the potential for income generation.  As the market for board game consumption has changed catastrophically in the last 25-30 years, along with increasing production costs your potential windfall is limited.  They will not earn you a million dollars, I would expect more like $25-50,000 each if they are viable ideas.

Go for it, try and sell your ideas to a game manufacturer, but be reasonable in your financial expectations

  2. If you're an amateur anything, you make no money.

There's a couple books and perhaps some online guides to presenting ideas to game companies.  If you're serious about making money I'd try contacting a smallish, relatively unknown game company like Real Deal, North Star, or Your Move Games.  If they think enough of your ideas they may want to have you work freelance on that game as a project.  The bad news is you'd make very little with them.  The good news is you'd get your foot in the door and then have a chance to negotiate a better deal on the next game idea.

  3. Contrary to what another responder said, no game company will buy an idea, and before anyone else says it... there is no need to copyright anything.

There's nothing wrong with being an amateur designer, as long as you don't quit your day job, and don't expect to make a living at it.   The majority of boardgame designers do it part time.

To present your game to a publisher, you'll need to build a prototype, and playtest the h**l out of it. That means assemble a group of people, give them the game and the rule book, then let them figure it out on their own.  This works best with non-friends/family, bacause friends will usually not give you an objective opinion.

You'll also need to know which publishers accept have submissions, and which ones publish the type of game you are trying to interest them in.
