How much does each shop typically pay? Is it worth it with the price of gas?

I guess it really depends how many stores you get.. and the kind of stores you get.. I mean if you get like I dont know old navy you probably wont get as much if you get a really expensive clothing store... I remember watching this show and this lady was a secret shopper.. she made like 7,000 canadian a month. which is really good.. for that kind of job.. I mean 84,000 A YEAR  so yeah I guess it depends how much energy and commitment you put into it..

You will never get rich being a mystery shopper.  I have been shopping for about three years now.  The only way to make money is to combine three or more shops into one trip.  One agency I represent offers incentives for "last minute" shops, so those sometimes are worthwhile.

If you are doing fast food shops, you get free lunch plus about six to eight dollars -- which may or may not cover your travel expenses.  If you can do one or two fast food shops in one trip, combined with a retail shop or business verification nearby, you can usually cover expenses.  

The agencies sometimes get into a bind and need a shop done immediately -- often the same day the shop is posted.  I have received several "name your price" offers, and these are usually well worth the effort -- providing you have a flexible schedule.
