Speedo gave him $1 million for his accomplishment. The U.S. pays $25,995 for every gold medal. So in addition to his bonus from speedo he was also awarded $207,966.

Because he matched Mark Spitz's record of 7 golds, Speedo rewarded him with a $1 million dollar bonus. They would have given him that 4 years ago if he had won 7 but he only won 6. I also read that he is expected to take in $6 million dollars in income.

He does not earn money for every gold he gets.  He earns his living by advertising and doing comericals.  The more well known you are in the Olympics the more gigs and good you get.

I don't think you "win" money in the Olympics, right? but sponsors will give you a c**p load of money for winning because you're drawing more people to their products.
