Question:

How much money do I need for a 3 week trip to Scandinavia?

My boyfriend and I are planning to take a trip there in the summer of 09. We're students and don't have much money.

We figure we can probably get flights for less than $900 each if we book early enough, but beyond that...?

21 days. Scandinavia--we don't want to limit it to one country.

We really want to go, and I looked briefly at hostels which cost $40-50 a night, but I don't know how these are set up--boys and girls seperate? We're also kind of private so having our own space/bed/room might take priority, even with money considered.

While we would like to see some of the attractions, our main concern is getting a feel of life there and the people--not really eating at nice restaurants, shopping, vacationing.

So what's probably the most conservative amount of money we would need to get by for three weeks including shelter, food, transportation (flight and within the area)?

What are our options?

Thanks!

  1. suggestions:

forget staying in hotels - stay in hostels.  It is more like the dorm style living.  If you can plan ahead and have an itinerary, you can usually book a room for two, but bathrooms are shared among all guests.

Usually there are cooking facilities in the hostels - and this really can cut down on expenses.  You may not think that this is as great as eating in restaurants, but you get to meet people from all over the world and share experiences.  You will also receive good tips on places to visit during your stay in the city you are in and/or are heading to next!

    another suggestion

look into Eurail pass for train travel from city to city

if interested, buy in the US as it is much cheaper than buying in Europe.  Also, in another way to cut down on travel expenses is to sleep on the train...you then don't need to pay for a night's lodging.

attractions - look into what you want to see...most of the museums, art institutes, etc. have certain days during the month where the admission is free - take advantage of them.

Use public transportation when and where available.  Much cheaper

Stay away from fancy restaurants - street vendors ususally have very good food and it is much cheaper.

Warning:  Scandanavia can be Very Very Expensive to visit.  You need to set a budget and stick to it.  I am trying to give you ways to cut your budget.

    hope this helps
