With a doctoral degree in the area they are teaching? I was thinking of becoming a science teacher, but I want to get a doctoral degree in education first. How much more money do teachers with a dr. degree make?

One more question. What are the salary differences in working at a public high school and working at a private high school? Thank you.

  1. I'm a HS Math Teacher and the answer is, "not enough".

Don't go into teaching for financial reasons. Most people go into teaching b/c they love working with kids. Very few make a lot of money in teaching.

Besides the fact that I like working with kids....I became a teacher for several reasons:

    1. 13 weeks vacation

    2. When I have children I can have up to a 2 year maternity leave

    3. Snow days

    4. I'll be on my kids' schedule

I originally started my college career in Pre-law and was all set to be a lawyer. Maybe in another life......

  2. There are many dependents here.  The state, the district, your education and your years of experience.  As far as private vs. public goes, there really isn't a sure fire answer.  Frankly, no one goes into education for the money and sometimes you work where you can get a job.

You will probably have to work in a school before getting your doctorate.  I know my college made me work at least 18 months as a teacher before getting my masters,  Many are the same way.

  3. We certainly don't do this for the money!  I've been teaching on the high school level since 1982.  The only one who makes a tiny bit over six figures is the principal, and I'm in a high-paying district on Long Island.

I can't imagine a more fulfilling, energizing, enjoyable career, though!
