I am going for a month. I plan to eat out maybe 2 or 3 times a week at decent (not too expensive) restaurant. on the weekends I plan to go see cathedrals and other tourist atractions in the city. I might go to the beach one time but might not. I do not plan to go to the bar and drink. I am living with a host family who will provide me with most of my meals. How much money do you think will I need?

  1. i have been there a few times.

mexico in general is not expensive, and if you are going to live in with a host family, you will have all of that paid for before hand.....sooooo

the residule amount of money you will need....hmmmm

restaurants could cost you more than $10 per visit IF you go to a REALLY nice place.  if you go to some regular nice expect to pay maybe $10 without your drink (juice, beer pop).  so many GOOD places don't cost that much tho.

the busses will take you to some nearby places.  maybe you should visit puerto vallarta and guanajuato or san miguel de allende.

make sure you take a 1st class bus, but you don't need to take an executive class.

perhaps 20 or 30 dollars per round trip...then there is the hotel and meals in those places a nice hotel does not have to be expensive...20 or 30 dollars will get you a NICE mom and pop place, but not luxury if you like the fancy touristy ones.

take lots of money to buy cool stuff.  the market there is great.  also talaquepaque (spelling) has loads of stuff for sale.

maybe some 200 dollars for your fun purchases and your "need" purchases.  if you are going to shop for many people, take more....

if you want to see some nice theatre...the balet folkorico at the teatro degollado is great.  i don't know how much, but you could google that one.

you could take the bus to school and save big time over a taxi.  i walked to school and bussed it home (hot hot heat!!!!!)

i lived on salto del agua street in jardines del country with a woman named silvia....it was so awesome.

the churces are fee of course, but maybe you will have a few museums to pay for.

if you have a digital camera, you have few costs there.  just put your pics on a disk evey time your chip gets full

your school might have a package deal to get you to some places like i mentioned above, but you can do it cheaper on your own unless you require luxury.  hope you have a great roomate with your family if there is more than one of you.  you save bigtime on hotel and taxi costs.

i can't imagine you spending anywhere near 1,000 dollars, especially if you don't plan on doing much of any bar hopping aand don't travel EVERY week.

    ....but i am not you.

  2. You don't need to take much cash - just for a day or two USD - as long as you have money in your bank account.

Use the Bank ATMs - they give you the best exchange rate.  You request cash in Pesos; I usually estimate at 10 pesos per dollar (exchange is about 10.80 - but I am not a math whiz!). Limit is usually 3000 or 4000 pesos per day.

Choose a bank that has the same logo as the one on your bank card to avoid extra charges ($5.00 per withdrawl).

    Enjoy your trip!

  3. I am going for a month as well to Michoacan. Guadalajara is about 2 hours from me. I am staying at my parent's house but I plan on eating out most of the time. I am only taking about $300. If you know spanish, speak it at all times or you will get ripped off everywhere you go. And if you look white, well you're going to get ripped off anyway. The best exchange rates are at banks. Don't be afraid of eating from places on the street, it's usually the best and cheapest food! Have fun! Feel free to email me if you have any questions!

  4. Mi amigo I'm from Guadalajara i effin love that place,

oh wow so awesome you get to stay with some Mexicans, how did you get to do that???????????????????????????????

Honestly I took $450 for a 3 week stay at my grandparents house, I was struggling towards the end so probably just to be save and make sure you get to go out and enjoy take about $600-800 if you can if not $500 is ok.
