It depends on the state. Michigan offers the most, with a 10 cent return per can. Iowa and several other states offer 5 cents, and others lump it as scrap aluminum and pay by the pound, with the price depending on the going market price for aluminum that day.

States with bottle/can deposits (5 cents unless noted):

California (10 cents for 24oz and larger bottles)

Connecticut

Delaware

Hawaii

Iowa

Maine (includes juice and water bottles, 15 cents for some wine bottles)

Massachusetts

Michigan (10 cents)

New York

Oregon

Vermont (15 cents for most liquor bottles)

Note that you probably won't be able to turn in cans from a state without a deposit in a state that does have one, unless you try to slip them past a person counting by hand. They get kind of annoyed if they catch it, though.

Depends on which state you are in. Most, if not all, of those states actually charge you up front the same amount that you get when you turn them in. So really you do not get any money at all. If you don't turn them in then you are loosing money.
