So, my mother ordinarily claims me as a dependent. If I want to get a return, can she still do that or no?

  1. If you are self employed or a director of a company you are obliged to complete a return (regardless of amount of income).

You may be asked to complete a Return even if you are an employee (and on PAYE).

  2. I think 10,000 yearly.

  3. You CAN file if you make at least $1.

If you are single and a dependent, you are required to file for 2008 if you make at least $5400 - if you are single and NOT a dependent, then the limit is $8950.  These numbers are for work as an employee, where taxes are deducted from your paychecks.  If you are self employed, the limit for having to file is $400 for the year.
