  1. a little good is not good enough, its a competitive industry - everyone with a camera wants to be pro - you have to compete with guys like me with years of photographic schooling and years selling the tools.

you will earn from nothing to a fortune, whats your niche? are you a great networker and marketer, are your images pro standard? do you know lighting et cetera?

  2. Taking the photos is the easy part--the business side is not.

  3. it all depends on what kind of work you do.

weddings is good money, but you won't have your own saturdays and no repeat business.

portraits will require you to build a customer base - you won't work much at first, but then you can make 50 bucks an hour on average.

Fine Art will require you to find a gallery that LOVES you.

Either way, to make money, expect to shell out several thousand dollars in cameras and lenses.

Digital cameras and computers and PhotoShop versions will need to get replaced with newer versions every 2-3 years.

  4. To make real money, you need to be more than "a lil good at it". Not to mention invest bucks in gear that will hold up under professional use. That, and deal with picky clients. And do more than just "playing with them on the computer" (read: have the ability to do extensive retouching). You can make mediocre money shooting freelance, but that means hustling anywhere and everywhere for work (along with about a million other people who think it's a glamorous, easy job). Ask that pro guy if he shows up.

  5. Hi Mom

To make money with photography depends on the demand, what you have to offer. If you have a shot of well know person and nobody seen it, any magazine will buy it on the spot.

That is what paparazzi are doing and making a good living with it.

If you have a good eye, good composition, good imagination and a good sense of color and cropping, than you wouldn't have to play around too much with photoshop.

When I shoot and have to print, i might add a little contrast to my pics, but that is about all. The pics are usually dead on and require the minimum. Otherwise, they will lose their natural edge.

A simple photographer makes around $28k a year.  A decent one makes about $38,000, and the best make around $60,000 and up.

  6. Photography is a very competitive field you have to be determind to do it...it's a good business to get into if you can handle critisizm (and i'm not talking about the light kind), deadlines, and major pressure... people are very particular when it comes to photos. As for the amounts you make... it honestly depends on where and who you work for... also you need to know your material and you need to know the camera inside and out what every little function does... even if your a little good at it... you need to master it.
