Saying you ran your dryer for 5 hours a week, how much energy do I save by hanging clothes out on the line and not using the dryer at all? Please give answer with specific energy amounts.

  1. Assuming that your 5 hours a week represents about five 10 pound loads using a dryer with a rating of about 1800 watts; you should save about 20 kWh.  

    Using the US average of 9.86 cents per kWh, that would give you a cost savings of about $1.97.  Your savings would vary depending on your cost per kWh.

    You might also take into consideration your time commitment to each activity.

    If your looking to reduce your energy consumption you might consider reducing your automobile usage.  There is a lot more room for savings there.
