if it's a friend then get a nice card to show you care and put $10-20 in it (depending on how much you can afford)

being that it's a friend they may very well not expect a gift from you... gifts are generally more expected from older family members, neighbors, family friends and such... because hey younger people are generally going to lots of grad parties and don't always have a lot of money that they can spare for others =]
