  1. Jockeys can make a decent living, the top jockeys make a ton. Where they have gotten screwed is on catastrophic injury insurance. The jockeys here at Churchill Downs have gone on strike over it, and the track owners have been real ***** about it. The jockey's own people who were supposed to keep an  insurance policy for them let it lapse, and stole most of the fund for themselves. Not every jockey earns like Kobe Bryant. Most are work-a-day folk.

  2. Most Jockeys make a very small amount per-ride

and 10 % of the prize money.

ie; TODAYS KENTUCKY DERBY # 1 winner will get like $200,000 for the day .. coz the prize is like $2 M

but for the derby ther are bonuses also and endorsement offers from advertisers.

At regular races if you win - and the purse (win jackpot) is $40,000 the jockey gets $4,000

If the 2nd place prize is $10,000 the jockey makes $1,000

    if 3 rd place is $2500 he/she gets $250.

The others ..settle for like $100. per mount..or so.

Jockeys can ride for as many trainers/owners as they can negotiate a deal with. some jockey ride a horse in 8 or 9 sometimes all of a ten ( 10 ) race day at the track.

the more wins a jockey starts to get - the more he is noticed by trainers who wish too hire him and the higher he can demand a higher "guaranteed $$  fee for riding"..

If your son really like horses..he should consider "being a trainer"..they get 30% +of the winning prize money.

race horse owners are always looking for a great trainer.

  3. Do You mean Professional??? If they are good my guess would be a few hundred thousand. Do you know they have to be very short? and slim. Here is a good web-site

    http://www.jockeysroom.com/msg4.htm

Also good Jockeys can command 25 to 30% of a purse not the normal  10%

  4. the top 30 or so jocks make 1 to 3 million a year, they ride 800 to 2000 races a year at 100.00 or per race, and get a %

of the purse the top jockey last year was Garrett K. Gomez  whos mounts earned over 20 million.

  5. 10% of the purse.

  6. they get a % of the purse and the more u win the more u get

unless u become famous, it is not the best way to get rich

  7. I dont care who the jockey is. There are no jockeys out there who can command 20 to 30 % of the winning purse. There may be the occasional bonus from an appreciative owner, but no jockeys life, even the top ones is more than one mount away from being over. if they have a bad week, a trainer can drop them. If he decide to ride a horse contrary to the trainers instructions, bye bye. Believe me, I have known jockeys and the majority of them are happy for anything that is given to them. If being a jockey was easy, they wouldnt have agents to do their talking for them.
