Question:

How much money have you saved by adding insulation to your attic?

Here in Oklahoma, we are suffering 101-104 degree days. Last month, my Electric bill was $240 for a 2000 sq ft home.

My husband went up into the attic, and says our insulation is quite insufficient, and our $$ is probably going through the roof (literally). We are thinking of buying some blown-in insulation, and doing it ourselves. Have any of you done this? How much of a difference did it make on your utility bills? How much do you think this little diy project will cost us? Sorry so many questions!

  1. The best thing to use is foam.  With out seeing the attic I could not tell you if it is possible or not.  It should make a big differance.

  2. it would probly be cheaper to just get rolls of insulation instead of blowing it in. and it would save you alot on your cooling bill and in a few months it will do the same for your heating bill

  3. Merely adding insulation isn't the ticket to success on this, it's incorporating the correct materials and application procedures that will make the difference you are looking for and need.  If you get me some particulars and maybe some photos of the attic and exterior soffit and roof I'll get you on track to making this a cost effective and efficient.  As to costs. . . the price of properly doing this will pay for itself in no time.

Communicating through this media isn't working.  I send replies/responses to questions that come to me through Yahoo Answers and my replies are returned as undeliverable.  If you do want me to help you out with this email me at mike@tradesprofessional.com mentioning this question.  I'll remember you and point you in the right direction.  I don't charge for extending a professional courtesy.

  4. I added 14 inches of blown in insulation last fall it payed for itself in two months. This summer I have noticed the house does not get as hot as it did in years past. If I was going to put a tag on the savings it would be about 600 over the last 9 months.

  5. See if your elecrric company will do an energy survey, They do them here and they give you coupons to incourage people to get extra insulation. lt's free and could save you a lot of money. Good Luck
