I realize that most jockeys, even in the biggest races, earn shamefully little for their efforts (and risk), but I'm hoping someone knows what a jockey might make for the biggest wins. Is it life-changing money? Or is it still pretty low?

Why does it seem like everyone is making money on the backs of these horses except, well, the guys actually on the backs of the horses???

Someone should page Alanis Morissette... Don't you think?

  1. Are you kidding Good jocks make lots of money

    10percent of the winning purse

    plus there fee

    you joking right

Your so wrong its tough in the begining but you start winning you make enough

And it's a life style they wish to choose .

many drop out,,, but it gets in your BLOOD

YOU JUST CAN'T STOP DOING IT

  2. Jocks get 10% of the purse money they win. Yeah it's not a lot but most jocks try and rid ein every race on the day's card thus increasing their chances of higher earnings. Some jocks also exercise the horses in the am and they get paid for that. Really good jocks such as Jerry Bailey , Gary Stevens , Edgar Prado.... etc etc can make millions a year.

  3. you can figure ken is going to bank 5 to 10 million with this triple crown horse! purses, special deals, tv shows, royalties, etc. future races are in store for big brown such as breeders cup-dubai and so on...

  4. He gets 10%. Now,if the purse is one million, it doesn't mean he will get 10% of that. The million is shared among the first 5 finishers. So maybe $600.00 for the winner.

Now out of his share he has a lot of extra expenses that he pays out of it, like wear and tear on equiptment, his valet and he has to pay his own transportation to the tracks, if the horse he rides finishes out of the money he only gets the standard Jockey mount fee.

Only a handful of the elite jockeys make that kind of money, it's really a small percentage

  5. 10% of the winner's share,so around $180,000 for both wins
