The tax revenue is in the billions.   The government makes more off smoking than the tobacco companies.  I am sure it is a net gain for the government in taxes even after they pay for cancer treatments.  And when people die young they don't collect their pensions and other things that cost money.

Well, if you figure that one person smoking about one package a day spends maybe $300 in a month in some provinces, and almost $4000 in a year, it is a scary amount.  Many millions for sure.
