Question:

How much money should I bring to Tortola, BVI?

I'm trying to plan a trip to Tortola for sometime over the summer. We've decided we're going to rent out a house, but I was wondering what other expenses we'd run in to. Can anyone guesstimate how much it costs for food/drink, etc. per day or at least give examples of what they spent and did?

Thanks!

  1. Honey...let me tell you.  Tortola is very expensive, bring a lot of money.  On an average when my boyfriend and I would go out for dinner at an average restaurant, our average bill was around $100 total.  It's expensive, but it's so worthwhile.

We stayed at Long Bay resort.  Please take a day to visit the other islands like Jost Van d**e and the Baths @ Virgin Gorda.

  2. Tortola is a British Virgin Island but they still accept US dollars.

Aside from the house rental fee, you will need to rent  a car, pay for gas, buy groceries and beverages and dine out. I'm sure you plan to do some excursions, maybe go to Virgin Gorda or another BVI island. Do some shopping. As a rule of thumb we have always plan on $100 per person a day, for food, excursions etc. We bring cash and use credit cards too. Some excursions accept cc and others just cash or travelers checks.

Food is expensive in the islands because everything is imported. Costs will be up to 25 to 30% higher. Some people bring one of those polar cooler full of frozen food if you are a family traveling to cut down on some expenses.

There are some budget places to eat. If you purchase food always check the expiration date.

Car rental will cost any where from $35-$60 a day plus 5% tax and $10 for a temp license. It's cheaper to rent by the week. The cheaper rate being a small compact car.

Have a great trip and enjoy.)

  3. Tortola is a US virgin island but it uses U.S. currency If you are from the U.S that should not be hard to figure. I have often travelled, the food prices may vary but not very much, housing would be your high cost factor, becuase tortola is a torrist destination as well. The number of people travelling is important to consider. Expenses: Groceries, renting a car, gas, touring, clubbing(optional), souvenirs etc. Be sure that the house you are renting has air condition that is working well. Some people assume that all these houses have air condition. As for the important part the money, consult with your travel advisors to find out if your bank has associations with banks in tortola. This way you can use your cards  to make transactions with out being too worried.
