  1. If you are in the United States that is impossible to answer.  It varies by state, county, income level, local unemployment rates and local costs.  It is usually just below the amount necessary to survive, but it depends on income sources.  It is very difficult to survive on no income at all.

  2. it varies depending on where you live, but it's not very much.  Where I live, a single mom of 2 gets about $1100/mo, but they deduct every$ you get from child support - so if you got $300/month in child support, it means your welfare would go down to $800.  Plus they try to control your life, you're not allowed to leave town for more than 7 days without letting them know, if your grandma sent you a cheque for $100 for your birthday you need to claim that!  People who act like life is peachy living off of welfare are usually scamming the system!

It's really worth it to do whatever you can to get any job at all.  Even working 20 hours a week at WalMart would give you more money, and it will also give you self-respect knowing that you're a contributing member of society, you'll make friends, trust me - you will feel better about yourself.  I'm sure there's lots of jobs you could do (even ones that you could bring your kid along).  You could deliver newspapers and still make more $ than you would on welfare!  Do personal care for the elderly or physically disabled.  Do home daycare, or work as a nanny ($12/hr and bring your child with you), clean homes - set your own schedule and bring kids with you!

If you must go on welfare, use the wisely and go back to school so you can have a career and make something of yourself.
