My sister is planning to go travelling around the world with her mate, (except America). She's planning to go for around 6months, but because she's staying each place for a week, she won't be working while she's travelling. She asked me to ask on here, how much you reckon she would have to save up. What do you reckon?

  1. about 520000 dollars if it is 2000 dollars a week

  2. There are lots of factors involved in working out how much, on average, she will need.

The countries she will be visiting will be useful to know. Northern Europe is generally taken to be expensive. Parts of Asia and South America are regarded as fairly cheap place to lives.

The style of accomodation will be also have an affect. Campsites are generally the cheapest option (of course she'll need to carry her tent and sleeping bag) followed by youth hostels. Hotels will pretty much be out of the question.

Transport will also have an impact. The cheapest Round the World tickets start at about £800 plus tax/surcharges. Once in the foreign country, transport around the country will need to be paid. Booking in advance will be the cheapest but then you lose flexibility of the travel.

Grocery shopping is the cheapest option if you are buying a week's groceries. If buying for one meal, it may be cheaper to out.

It also depends on what activites she wants to do when travelling.

She may be able to do the trip on a £1000 a month (including the RTW airfares) if she stays in campsites, doesn't eat out and catches the cheapest mode of transport when in country. Realistically though, I reckon she's looking at £1200 to £1500 a month depending on how careful/reckless she is with her money.
