chinese gold medalists get around $20,000 US, a house, a car, and a bunch of other stuff. you can buy a lot of things with $20k US at china.

For US it is $25,000 for gold

Sport federations give additional prize money to their winners as well.Of course they earn so much more than this from endorsements.  Some countries pay incentive money like Ethiopia who paid Wami and Cheruiyot $500,000.

The U.S. gives our athletes $25,000 for each gold medal

$15,000 for silver

Michael Phelps earned $200,000

Nastia Liukin earned $70,000

Depends on the country... they usually get rewarded by their National Olympic Committee, sponsors, governments, and even by private businesses.

For example, a Mexican guy who won a gold medal in taekwondo today ended up earning $500,000 dollars through a fund established by the Mexican Olympic Committee, the Mexican government, the foundation led by billionaire Carlos Slim, and two TV stations.

Of course, we don't get medals very often, so it's almost a national party when somebody wins one :)

It depends on the country, I believe.  Some countries give a lot, while some might not even give any.
