How much money would it cost to send a letter from the US to the Philippines?

I want to send a letter (regular size, just pieces of paper in a regular envelope) to a friend who is currently in the Philippines (if you want to know why it's because writing is like a lost art. I'm just trying to bring it back), and I wanted to know if the postage price is the same. Also, how many stamps (if I could send it) would I have to put on there? I mean, would it be the same sending the letter out of the country as it is in the country? Also, can I just drop in the mailbox, or do I have to take it to the post office? If I did have to take it to the post office, I would have to pay for it, wouldn't I? >.<

Please, let me know! Plus, how long would it take to get there?
