i have heard that some of it happened. was the band based off of a real band or was penny lane based off of someone real? what was real and what was fake

"Loosely based" is a good term Writer/director Cameron Crowe was a writer at Rolling Stone while a teenager and the film is about his experiences. Sweetwater and Penny Lane are amalgams of different bands and groupies.
