  1. Huh?

    They don't 'have' Union Pacific...

WC and Illinois CENTRAL (not national), yes...

  2. They may own some UP stock but they do not have controling interest in the UP.

  3. I will try to answer your question as best I can.  If you are refering to the government of Canada, they no longer own freight railroads.  They still own VIA Rail, the national passenger carrier.  Canadian National was a government entitiy for several years, however was made public in November 1995.  CN has owned several companies over the years.  They owned the Grand Trunk Western (GTW) which basically ran from Detroit and Port Huron to Chicago; the Duluth, WInnipeg and Pacific (DWP) which ran from International Falls to Duluth in Minnesota; the Detroit, Toledo and Ironton (DTI), which operated in Michigan and Ohio and the Central Vermont (CV), which ran from Montreal to New London, Conneticut.  These companies have just become paper companies within the organization.  Much of the DTI and CV trackage has been sold to short-line operators.  After going public, the railroad has continued to expand.  In 1998, it bought the Illinois Central (IC) and then in 2001 it bought the Wisconsin Central (WC).  It further expanded in 2003 by winning the concession to operate the BC Rail line in British Columbia (the province still owns the right of way) as well as Great Lakes Transportation, which operates 3 railroads, including the Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range.  With that purchase, it closed a 10 mile gap in its line in the Duluth region that it did not own.  The railroad now runs like a giant triangle from Winnipeg to Toronto To Chicago with lines branching out at each point of the triangle.  From Winnipeg, it goes out to Vancouver and Prince Rupert, BC.  From Toronto it goes out to Halifax, NS and from Chicago it goes out to New Orleans.
