I've heard so many varying numbers on why our trade deficit is so big. Is it really mostly from the importation of oil?

  1. It's because of a lot of reasons and whether you want to pick oil specifically or not depends on how much you like to use scare tactics to make a point.  We import something like 2 billion dollars of oil a day, but we also import over a billion dollars a day of chinese manufactured goods.  We have a trillion dollar trade relationship with Canada, people just don't pick on that as much because it's fairly balanced.  We've had deficits with most asian countries for a long time now though in addition to the middle east.
