  1. It is depends on the nature ship

    10,000–24,999 DWT: General Purpose tanker

    25,000–44,999 DWT: Medium Range tanker

    45,000–79,999 DWT: Large Range 1 (LR1)

    80,000–159,999 DWT: Large Range 2 (LR2)

160,000–319,999 DWT: Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC)

320,000–549,999 DWT: Ultra Large Crude Carrier (ULCC)

Lindsay, Im also agreeing with voice of Reason, he is right in DWT

  2. If you google Exxon Valdez you will find out what a ship running in shallow and treacherous waters  will carry. something like 1.23 million barrels. I think that would be less than 200 litres per barrel

Now the ships carrying oil from Saudi Arabia to many parts of the world are up to 3 times as large.

They are not recommended to be used in shallow waters. But a range up to 500 million litres, and as low as 100 million litres.

We used to have great lakes tankers, smaller, but I have not seen one in recent years.

  3. It depends on the ship.

    10,000–24,999 DWT: General Purpose tanker

    25,000–44,999 DWT: Medium Range tanker

    45,000–79,999 DWT: Large Range 1 (LR1)

    80,000–159,999 DWT: Large Range 2 (LR2)

160,000–319,999 DWT: Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC)

320,000–549,999 DWT: Ultra Large Crude Carrier (ULCC)

Lindsey, you are mistaken.  DWT is equal to the total displacement MINUS the actual weight of the ship.  Thus it is a measurement of the ships carrying capacity.

  4. Depends  on the type of ship.  The largest FPSO - floating production, storage & offloading vessel in the world is ExxonMobil's Kizomba A which can store up to 2.2 billion barrels.

1 barrel of oil = 42 gallons or 158 liters

Answer above lists DWT - deadweight tonnage which usually refers to the actual weight of the ship.

Referring to the answers regarding DWT - People in the oil & gas industry do not use DWT to refer to the oil storage capacity of a vessel.  Please refer to the site from Teekay Offshore for the industry defnition.

DWT Deadweight Tonnage - A ship''s total weight (in metric tons) when fully loaded with cargo plus crew, fuel and provisions.  WHICH MEANS NOT STRICTLY OIL.
