Compare barrels of crude oil used by refineries (to make fuel) vs. amount used by Chemical Industry for making polyethylene, polypropylene, etc. (materials used to make plastics for example) in the United States.

Unlike many other countries, the USA tends to burn most of the available processed petroleum as fuel.  Keep in mind that the USA is consuming almost 25 percent of the world's petroleum each year.
