How much oxycodone is too much?

I had a circumcision three weeks ago and was prescribed oxycodone. I recently underwent acl surgery and was again prescribed the same medication. I have been on the same medication for three weeks now and with this new surgery the pain is much worse than with my circumcision a few weeks ago. The bottle says to only take 1-2 every four hours but I want to take more. Can I take 3? Would that be too much? Is there too much? Can I take too many during a 24 hour period?

  1. If your pain is not controlled by the amount of medication as prescribed you should contact your doctor.  Do not take more than prescribed because someone tells you it is okay.  If your pain is not controlled by the amount of medication your doctor prescribed then there may be a problem with your surgery.  In addition, your recent surgery and use of pain medicine, may have increased your tolerance of the opiate pain medication therefore decreasing its effectiveness.  Your doctor would need to know this so he can address it.  Call your doctor.

  2. Agree with other poster.

But yes, you can take too much during a 24 hour period. So just watch the overall dosage numbers which should be on the pack. If you stay under that, you should be fine (maybe loopy, but fine).

  3. Yes you can take too much...but 3 will not hurt you.  3 may mess you up If you don't have a tolerance.  I have been taking Oxycodone and oxycontin for two years.  I take 3 oxycodone and 2 oxycontin a day for a chronic pain in my lower back and legs.  My doctor says I can take more as needed for my pain so I don't think you will have a problem with 3.  But be carefull, if you take to much this medication can send you to the ER. Don't take way more than prescribedd, 1 or 2 more wont hurt you, but more  yes!!!

  4. Well we can assume you are not a member of "The Judean's People's front." I would take three yes, but do not make a habit out of it. Oxycodone is highly mentally addiciting and trust me, the more you take over time, and this can be three days, the less effective it gets.

  5. It depends if there is acetamenophen in it as well? Oxycodone can depress your breathing, which is obviously dangerous. But this should not really occur if the dose is slowly titrated upwards. I would ask the doctor. One, you will run out of meds and the doctor will be wondering why if you increase the dose without asking. Two, if there is still more pain perhaps something else is wrong or your condition is getting worse.
