Does anyone know of any figures for oxygen production by species? Can anyone guide me to a source for such information?

  1. Algae are a large and successful group of organisms, which flourish in the sea, in fresh-water and in damp places on land. Most algae contain green chlorophyll, and can produce foods, such as sugars, from the sun.

  2. 75% of our breaths come from oxygen produced by marine algae. 20% from tropical rainforests. 5% all other sources. Cyanobacteria originally made most the oxygen, but large seaweeds and giant kelp produce the most now. There are several thousand species of algae.

  3. Alga CONSUMES oxygen from the water and causes what is called 'dead zones' in ocean areas where it is prolific. Trees and othe above ground leafy plants produce oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide.

  4. Some algae can multiply very quickly in polluted lakes and rivers. The thick layers can often upset the water's natural balance and deprive it of oxygen.

All algae have photosynthetic machinery ultimately derived from the cyanobacteria, and so produce oxygen as a by-product of photosynthesis, unlike other photosynthetic bacteria such as purple and green sulfur bacteria.
