Question:

How much pain are you supposed to feel after getting a filling?

A few weeks ago I received 3 fillings in 3 different molars. The procedure did not hurt, but after the numbness wore off, my teeth began to throb along with the usual sensitivity to cold and heat. I thought this would go away in a few days, but it only seems to be getting worse. Sometimes the pain is so bad it keeps me up at night. Any help would be much appreciated.

  1. Usually after a filling the worst pain I feel is the headache caused by the drill vibrating my jaw and skull.  You shouldn't have heat/cold sensitivity at all after the cavity is repaired.  It also shouldn't require pain medicine.  If it's bad enough that it keeps you up at night, call your dentist!  A few weeks is a long time when your teeth hurt!  He or she will likely not charge or offer a discounted rate if there was a gap or something else wrong with the fillings.

Your avatar is funny in this context, btw.

  2. The symptoms that u describe are of acute pulpitis. Due to some reason the nerves of your teeth seem to have been irreversibely damaged. In such instances, instead of lingering on with the painful condittion hoping that it would go away on its own, go to your dentist immediatly and get a root canal treatment done for the offending tooth. Delay may lead to pus accumulation in the surrounding tissue and you may then have to loose your tooth.

  3. Did your dentist give you any pain medicine? (Like Hydrocodone?) I have a few fillings, and whilst they should not hurt - your nerves may be very sensitive to heat and mostly cold. You should call your dentist and have them X-ray to see if the filling has broke or something.

  4. This throbbing thing isnt good.  The tooth mustve been infected and now the infection is trying to exit and cant, because its filled.

    You need to call him.

It could be an abcess, which is a pocket of infection near the root of the tooth.

It was probably draining out of the tooth before...now its trapped . The more the infection builds up, the more it will throb.

    XRAYS shouldve detected it.

You shouldnt even notice fillings 3 weeks later

  5. Soounds like your dentist didn't do a very good job.  Call him back up and tell him about the pain you have.  It sounds like it is infected, you might need antibiotics.

  7. Well you're not supposed to have any pain/sensitivity after the filling is done.

I feel your pain.  Literally!  I just got a cavity filled a week ago and at first it felt fine.  When the novocaine wore off it got worse.  Now it's UNBEARABLE and the sensitivity to cold is still there.  It's worse than it was before I got the filling.  I'm going back on Thursday.  I'm requesting antibiotics, x-rays, and PAIN MEDS!!!!!  I'm not leaving until my dentist figures out what is going on and fixes it.   I highly suggest you do the same!
