  1. I don't know what the average would be because there are many factors that can vary the costs. Just for kicks I added up what I spent last month for the items on your list and it came to almost $500. With the insurance I only included auto, not home, life, or health.

  2. Does your wife drive and have a car?

Since you talk about the real world, I assume that you will quailfy for quite high car insurance rates as a person under age 25.

Obviously your insurance rate will depend upon where you live and the types of car(s) you have.

I live in a tiny town in Indiana

My electric bill (nipsco) was $225. This is about average for the winter

My water bill includes sewage too and it is about $50- $70.00 a month but we do have three in our home and we run the electric dishwasher as well as a washer and dryer so your expenses for the aforementioned bills might not be that high!

My phone is with verizon it is $50.00 per month but I suppose vontage would be a cheaper and better alternative.

I have my internet thru my cable company the internet is $39.00 per month and the cable is about $60 but I do have the digital box and a premium channel (hbo)

YOu might not want or need that so you could probably get buy with dial up and basic cable

My insurance (homeowners) is paid as part of my monthly mortgage payment but I do  suggest renters insurance if you live in an apartment.

Again, this is in INDIANA not far from Chicago so the prices might be slightly higher than where you are or where you are planning to live.

    When we started out

we were able to live for way less.

Since we both worked. We turned the thermostat OFF while we were at work and dialed it to come on about an hour before we got home.

    Neither of us had cellphones

We had dial up internet (10.00 per month with people pc)

We had basic phone service $34.00 (didnt make many long distance calls)

and no washer and dryer or dishwasher so our water bill was less.

Cable was basic cable $25.00 per month for the very basic line up

so there are ways that you can save if you need to while just starting out

We rented movies from the library often

  3. It all depends on where you live. In small rural areas, the cost would be fairly low, in big cities, the cost is high.

  4. I live outside of Boston, MA closer to RI..  Last month we paid the following:

Auto insurance only(we have good rates) - $100

Electric  - $125 even though we only used about 400 kilowatts

    Water - on average, $25.

    Phone - $33

    Cable - $33

    Internet access $33.

Currently with the phone, cable and internet we are with Comcast and pay $99/month for all three.  Previously, our phone was $50/month and cable was nearly $60.

I assume heat is included with your apartment.  If you have electric heat, and you have to pay for it.......Yikes!
