Energy costs and emissions are almost directly related to vehicle weight, assuming a high degree of recycling. There are differences based on technologies, but America is not exceedingly efficient.  America has cut  emissions of particulates and many toxic elements, but we still  have so far to go that we can not match a vehicle with half the weight.
