I'm growing, popping, and selling popcorn for my SAE project. I've done some research on corn, and get the general idea on how to grow popcorn, but now my question is how much? how much corn do i need to grow to be able to have enough to sell? oh, and does corn grow multiple time, like you pick it and it re-grows, or do you have to clear out the whole plant after the corn is picked(if that even makes sense)?

  1. This might be a round-about way to help you figure it out but here goes...

The recommendation of sweet corn to feed a family of four for a year is to plant a 140 foot row which equals about 210 plants. (spaced at 8").

That's about 52 plants per person and at 2-4 ears per stalk that means about 104-208 ears.

There are about 600 kernels on one ear of corn.

If you recalculate all of that with the knowledge that popcorns usually yield about 1/3 of regular corn you should be able to figure out what you need to grow to sell what you want to sell.

I have no idea how many kernels go into one bag of popcorn, but I guess you will be figuring that out as part of your project.

    Good luck!
