How much profit does a jewelry store make on an engagement ring or wedding band?

Considering how much gold is in the setting and the price of the stones, I have a feeling the makeup is sky high.

I have been looking at the same thing! If you are not opposed to it Overstock.com has some really good deals on rings and some pretty original ones too. But I LOVE the idea of tattooing wedding rings on. A tatoo is a lifetime commitment in and of itself and what better way to commit to the person you love? We are looking at the Bible verse "I am my beloved, and my beloved is mine" in Hebrew for ours. Don't get me wrong, I would still like an engagement ring but nothing over $500.00

The general rule for jewelry stores is 3x.

So, say a ring costs them $100. They add another $100 to replace the one you bought and buy themselves a new one. Then they add another $100 for pure profit.

So a ring that costs them $100 is costing you $300.

It is ridiculous! My friend worked for Gordons Jewler for 2 years and she got her 3 karat flawless diamond set for $10,000 and it sold for $25,000 in the store.

Probably a fair bit, but there's markup on everything - from chocolate bars to outrageous prices for some designer clothes.

With jewellery, don't be fooled by going for brand name; there are always similar looking settings and styles elsewhere.

most wedding bands are made with indian gold no matter what carrot.

Take away labor to mould the ring and youve bought a wedding band that cost 40 pound maximum.  thats for an ounce.

gold is cheap, diamonds are mostly mines by slaves and the bands represent a pagan tradition. its the symbol for saturn not ever lasting love.

do something original for your wedding.

personally...not getting married an still staying together is a better choice.
