Question:

How much propane is being used with pilot running on a gas fireplace?

i work at a fireplace shop and i always get the question how much propane will be used when leaving pilot on during the summer. i cant really answer that question because i dont know. or anybody here. so is there a graph to go by? with a unit thats 10,000 btu's to one that is 50,000?

  1. A pilot is about 1000 btu's...So when you consider that 100,000 btu's burns a gallon an hour...It'll burn a 20 pounder in a little less than 90 days.

    I think you are better off to leave the pilot lit. It keeps the regulator moving and healthy, and the little bit of temperature keeps everything dry internally...


  2. I can't provide an answer in cu. ft. but will say that with the current price of propane I wouldn't let the pilot run for the summer. A big waste of money. It would probably be equivalent to a fast dripping faucet and I don't know anyone who wouldn't fix that leak as quickly as possible.
