It's probably a 1.5 or 2 ton unit.

Would it be in the 8 oz can range or should I be shopping more in the 30 pound tank range?

  1. It will take several pounds. It must be charged according to subcooling not superheat. You must be EPA certified or the fine is very heavy if caught.

I know a man who was tagged with a 8500$ dollar fine in Arkansas.

He obtained refrigerant and was charging his neighbors a/c and was not certified.

  2. I dont know where you are going to buy it unless someone sells it to you illegaly.  R12 is not and R22 will not be available to anyone soon.  So that leaves you probably having to recharge your system with one of the new generation refigerants and you will have to change out the oil as well.  It is time to see a refrigeration person    sorry.

  3. You cannot legally purchase r22 unless your an ac man or refridgerent person...soon it is going to be totally illegal for anyone to use it at all..and manufacturers are rushing to seell thier r22 a/c's very cheap and very quick..They will no longer exist..It is very costly..
