  1. The 10 gauge 3.5" shell generates about 62.9 lbs. of recoil (according to Chuck Hawk's recoil table).  The .458 Winchester Magnum generates about 62.3 lbs. of recoil using the 500 grain bullet (again, referring to Chuck Hawk's recoil table).  So they are both pretty close.  I own a .4-5-8 Win. Mag. and when I shoot the 510 grain soft-points the recoil feels closer to 70 lbs.  I don't know who currently is making a 10 gauge.  There were some Spanish shotguns chambered in this gauge but I haven't seen any in a while.  I believe Remington still offers a 10 gauge in auto-loader, the:  Model SP-10.™

  2. Its more than a 12 gauge, dont know who makes them,I rarely see ammo for them.

  3. I own a single-shot H&R goose gun as a supplemental gun in the duck blind.

The recoil is very manageable because of the weight / balance of the 36 - inch barrel.

    H&R is Harrington & Richardson

I'm pretty sure there are autos available in 10 gauge. Try Benelli

  4. Recoil all depends on how much powder and shot is in the shell and the velocity of the shot as it leaves the muzzle of the shotgun.  If you will look on the side of the shotshell box, it often gives the velocity of ounces of shot and the velocity of the shot.  To calculate the free recoil all you have to do is to multiply the ounces of shot times 437.5 times 32.17 times powder charge in grains times 4,000.  Divide this huge number by the weight of the gun in pounds.  The final number is the free recoil in ft. per second.  Do this for several different guns and loads to get a basis for comparison.

  5. Believe it or not the recoil of a 10 gauge shotgun is about the same as a 3 1/2 inch 12 gauge cartridge...... When the 3 1/2 cartridge was invented and manufacturers started making shotguns that could accept them it doomed the 10 gauge..... Read below for an in depth article....
