  1. the only return you get is from the dividend

    $2.06 per share

  2. When you look at returns in financial situations there are a number of considerations. Other people have responded by saying that your dividend return is $2.06 per share. I am not sure where they got that figure. AXA last sold on Friday 11th July 2008 on  the ASX at $4.62 and I cannot see where the Company has declared a dividend of $2.06.

Most serious investors look at the Yield which is the amount of dividend divided by the market value of the share times 100. Others consider the return based upon the price they originally paid for the share, which is not the most practical consideration.

Let us say you bought a share at $1.00 six months ago, and the company declares a dividend today of 10 cents per share to be paid in two months time. This means that your return on your original investment will be 10% in two months time. When you collect the dividend in two months time you have received a 10% return on your original investment but this equates to an annual rate of 15% because you have only had your money invested for eight months. If the share could be sold today on the ASX for $2.00 but you did not sell it, the declared dividend of 10 cents will yield you a return of 5% when paid providing it is still able to be sold at $2.00 on that day. This would equate to an annual rate of return of 7.5% on the value of your investment.

  3. around $900 you get $2.06 per share as dividends
