Question:

How much roof should I replace to fix a hole?

A tree fell onto the roof of my house and made a hole about 6"x12" and I need it repaired. The roof is only a few years old and in good condition, so when I just received an estimate for repair, the contractor listed one sheet of decking and the appropriate number of shingles to cover that area. The insurance company budgeted to replace the whole left front slope of our A frame roof. Once more, had friends tell me that I've if I have any sort of damage to the roof, that I should have the entire roof redone. That seems a bit excessive to me, but why would replacing the entire roof or at least an entire section of the roof be suggested to me? Has this contractor provided the appropriate amount of repair work?

  1. ????

    Get more estimates.

My first thought was just the damaged sheet of decking.

Then thought maybe needs a larger area "just in case".

Shingles are going to have to come off all the way to the top in order to get them back on proper.

  2. There is no way of knowing how much damage was really done without checking the structure.  If you have access to the attic, you can see if any of the rafters or trusses are broken.  If it isn't, then your roofer can replace just the one sheet of plywood and the shingles.  He will need to strip back the shingles to also replace the felt, so figure 1 sheet of plywood, 2 bundles of shingles, a roll of felt, and nails, along with labor.  Sounds like you made out OK.  If the rafter is cracked though, you are looking at a much more extensive fix.  In addition to the roof, there may be repairs to the ceiling inside the house needed.  Good luck.

  3. The first thing to do is go through the crawl space and check your rafters for any damage if no damage to them remove the shingles the damaged part of the roof enough to clear from around the damaged spot.A shingle is 3ft.long and 12in.wide you should be able to get to two rafters,in this space remove all nails find the center of each rafter 12in.above and 12in.below damage, mark the plywood center of each rafter, draw A line down each rafter take A framers square draw A line to connect the two rafters set saw to 5/8in.dept cut out damaged spot in the center top and bottom of each cut finish the cut with A wood chisel {don t cut past any line w/saw} cut 2ea.2X4s to fit between rafters place 2x4 halfway under xing plywood w/1in.drywall screws through plywood s***w 2x4s in place now cut A piece of 1/2in cdx plywood the opening use screws across top and bottom of new plywood and nails at rafters cover w/roofing and replace shingles.
