How much (roughly) does it cost per sq. foot to build a home?

I'm looking to build a custom home, and I'm wondering if I just did the basics in each room what it would cost roughly per sq. foot? Not including the lot either, just the home itself (including septic tank, well water install) I believe years ago it was about $140/sq. foot to build a home, but I'm sure that number has changed. I'm not looking to build more then 2,000 sq. ft.

  1. My father in law is building a custom home in texas for 108 per sq foot.

  2. This will vary from region to region, but you are still in the correct ballpark.  I'm getting ready to build a new house myself (western North Carolina mountains) and have a detailed cost estimate, including builder overhead and profit, on a custom designed 2,300 square foot home for just under $125 a square foot.  This does not, however, include well and septic tank.

It may also help you to know, in case you are considering doing the general contracting yourself, that the overhead and profit number on this project was about $60k.

    Good luck.
