For months I've only been giving my crab freshwater and not salt. I hear that salt helps them moult and such, anway how much do I put in? It's only a small dish that I'm putting this saltwater in so please bear in mind that I can't put pounds upon pounds of salt in.

Thanks

  1. I don't think you need salt.  Here is an excellent care site:

  2. yes you do need salt water for ALL land hermit crabs. including purple pincers.

You have to use aquarium salt in order to simulate the ocean water. regular salt contains synthesized iodine, which can help humans but is dangerous to crabs. Most brands of aquarium salt come with instructions on mixing. i mix up 2 liters at a time so I have it on hand to refill dishes.

If you want to do it by smal dish a little pinch of salt may do.

I sometimes add aquarium salt to food for my crabs and they enjoy it.

Salt water is important for moult like you said but they alos use it to balance out shell water. Hermit crabs keep some water in their shells to keep their abdomen and gills hydrated.
