  1. salt.. what do you need to add salt for?

  2. Why would you want to put salt in a swimming pool.

Chlorine and acid for the PH level

  3. This is a good question to ask your local pool supply store.  Take a sample of your water and they can tell you what to add.

Or, your owner's manual should tell you this.

  4. You need to add 50 pounds per 2,000 US gallons for an previously unsalted pool. You don't give your wall height here or if the pool is dished out, so I don't have a depth to work with. Heck, I don't even know if that pool has even been salted before and has a residual in it, so I can only offer the following for a brand new salt water installation, that has zero salt content and this is new water.

Measure your wall height and toss it and the other two figures into the online calculator here, http://www.backyardcitypools.com/swimmin...

to get your water volume. Divide that final number in USG by 2000  and that will give you the required salt bags ( usually comes in a 50 pound bag )to bring the salinity to 3,000 ppm, which is in the range that those units like to operate at.

If this pool has been a chlorine pool previously ( old water), it will have a slight salinity level to start with. You'll have to get it tested to determine what it is before adding any salt. The local pool shop should be able to do this for you for free, if you bring in a sample of your water.
